P-Theory were formed in 2005 when 3 key musicians on the UK funk scene were introduced to Kevin Goins through the Dutch record label Funk To The Max.
Band leader Alex Campbell explains "The three of us Wiggles, Granny and I) had been working hard hustling, recording and gigging in various bands when we were introduced to Kevin. It was like a dream come true to us to collaborate with one of our true musical heroes and brother of our favourite singer of all time. Glenn Goins was the closest thing we had ever heard to the voice of God and having used that amazing voice to break George Clinton's P-Funk empire to the masses with the Mothership Connection album he left P-Funk to form a band with his equally talented younger brother Kevin. I mean, Glenn used to call the mothership to land and we now had the opportunity to play with his brother!."
Kevin was the lead vocalist of the legendary funk bands Quazar and General Kane and had been looking for the right collective group of musicians for years to carry on his legacy. Kevin explains "Quazar was family to me and I had never met a bunch of musicians that moved as one like that, until I met these crazy white boys from England. Those guys made me wanna jump again."
P-Theory's first meeting was a 1 week residential lock in at a remote studio in Wales that was an old converted brewery. Alex explains "We didn't know what was going to happen, we just knew that we were all on the one accord and therefore we wouldn't try and pre-determine anything we would just hang out and play, just press record and see what happened....the ultimate jam session." The band recorded 23 songs in that week, 12 of which became their first album "From The Hood To The Wood" so titled in recognition of the fact that two completely different cultures had came together and found a common language through roots music.
Upon the album's release "From The Hood To The Wood" met immediate international acclaim. San Francisco DJ and international soul music historian Rickey Vincent placed the album in his top 10 funk albums of the new millennium describing the album as "This bizarre collaboration is actually the most authentic Funkadelic-ism of the 2000's. Deep, hard and out, Kevin Goins channels Plainfield soul through European musicians that just bring the stank."
P-Theory then hit the road and toured the UK and East USA during 2007 and extended their reputation through incendiary live performances. Band originator Graham 'Granny' Kay explains "We had done it on the fly in the studio, could we capture the same essence live? But we soon realised that we had one of the best frontmen ever that could have the audience eating out of the palm of his hand so we just did it and managed to make it pay along the way."
Having seen it work live the band made the decision to focus on the core strength's which was Kevin's incredible gospel vocal over nasty guitar driven grooves that made people want to dance. 2007 saw them record their second album "Chocolate Sock" in an ancient church in rural England. Alex explains "We learned that we had something unique by seeing the audience reactions to our live shows. We worked best when we just let Kevin take them back to church and made them feel euphoric about the moment they were in. We had always felt reserved about playing the faith card whilst we had deep acknowledgement about the blessings we had been given by being together. European's don't celebrate faith in the same way as black Americans but I suppose that is because we, or certainly the British, are more reserved about sharing a common love for the common good."
Chocolate Sock saw the band mix interpretations of gospel classics with their own original music detailing the story of their blessings to date. Having learned to shave the jam sessions into concise songs, P-Theory's second album saw them introduce the British blues based groove to the US gospel audience. The week after he had interviewed Prince on his WVOF radio show, new music pioneer Joe Kelley described Chocolate Sock as an amazing album telling his audience "I knew when P-Theory dropped a new album it was going to be good but I put the album in my car and the goose bumps broke out on my arm as I'm driving down the highway....this is just a smoking record!"
A full European tour followed and saw P-Theory headlining festivals throughout the continent and broadcast on live TV stations as they went. Kevin Goins explains "We got caught in a whirlwind, what started out with us just being us ended up with us getting police escorts around Spain, all I knew was that it was time to drop the bomb so I turned to the only one I knew that mattered - Billy Bass."
Rock 'n' roll Hall of Fame member Billy 'Bass' Nelson grew up with Kevin and Glenn in Plainfield NJ, the home of the funk - the "P" in P-Funk. Having come up with the name Funkadelic for the original P-Funk band Billy's reputation as a merciless musical perfectionist saw him play and write some of the most influential soul records of all time. His work with the Temptations, The Commodores, Jermaine Jackson, Lionel Richie and countless others needs no explanation and he used that experience in full effect to work with P-Theory on their third album "Redemption".
Alex explains "When Billy Bass digs your groove you know you've got it going on! As task master as he is, if your ever going to listen to anyone musically then it is Billy Bass. He has played on our favourite records of all time and is without doubt our favourite and most soulful bass player ever - he needs no introduction or explanation, his legacy speaks for itself."
P-Theory's mission is to create some new and innovative music that draws upon the collective influence and experience of the classic recordings of all time in order to test the theory that all great recordings are based on great performances and no computer will ever replace a musician wearing his heart on his sleeve and expressing it via his instrument.
"Redemption" is due for release on December 20th 2010 and a full European tour for spring 2010 will be announced shortly on this site. As demanded during their live sets - "What's the name of this band?......P-THEORY!!!"
